Dazed and Confused: Where next for UK plc on the global stage? Jericho Conversations with Nick Baird

We are thrilled to invite you to the next Jericho Conversations with Nick Baird as we look to delve into the intricacies of Britain's evolving role in global affairs, examining its past, present, and future trajectory.

A report released earlier this year by UCL calls for an ambitious reform of the Foreign Office and wider government machinery to safeguard future UK prosperity and security. James Landale, Diplomatic correspondent at the BBC recently reported that Britain needs to have a clearer sense of its "purpose, history, interests and assets as an off-shore, mid-sized power". It "will not be able to rely on just its traditional alliances with the US and Europe" but should instead form "pragmatic" new partnerships with other "middle powers" elsewhere in the world, they say.

Nick Baird will draw from his rich experience as Chair of the Trade Remedies Authority, former UK Ambassador to Turkey, and chief executive officer of UK Trade & Investment. Jericho Partner Matthew Gwyther will talk to Nick about his unique insights into the complex narratives surrounding Britain's foreign policy, exploring how historical perspectives have shaped its contemporary role on the world stage. Is there a new direction Labour wishes to take UK PLC?

Our conversation will touch upon Dean Acheson's famous quip about Britain's struggle to redefine itself post-empire, a sentiment that continues to resonate deeply in diplomatic circles and public discourse. Nick will shed light on Britain's quest to find its place in a changing global landscape, reflecting on pivotal moments from Suez to Brexit.

We hope you'll join us for a fascinating interview plus Q&A on Tuesday 12 November at 1:00 pm (GMT).
